Health Status of Non-Physician University Hospital Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Findings from Periodic Health Examinations in 2020–2021

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the health status of university hospital workers in 2020 and 2021. Methods: This retrospective registry-based study was conducted between January and July 2022. Data were obtained from a standard periodic health examination (PHE) form, which includes sociodemographic characteristics, medical history, examination findings, and laboratory results. Descriptive statistics and McNemar’s test was used in analysis. Statistical significance was accepted as p<0.05. Results: Of the study group, 475 (50.5%) were male and 466 (49.5%) were female. Ages ranged from 19 to 55 years (mean, 34.95 ± 8.32). Nearly half of hospital personnel (48.9%) smoked cigarettes, 11.6% consumed alcohol, and 14.9% were obese. The most common complaint at the first examination was joint pain (18.9%), and the most common physician-diagnosed condition was visual impairment (15.6%). Overall, 1.4% and 54.0% of participants lacked tetanus and hepatitis B vaccinations, respectively. Periodic examinations performed in 2020 and 2021 showed no differences in dysrhythmia, impaired renal function, hearing impairment, or visual impairment (p>0.05). Conclusion: Compared with the first year of the pandemic, the frequency of anemia and abnormal chest radiography decreased, whereas high blood glucose levels and abnormal liver function tests increased in the second year. Annual health examinations are key for early disease detection and health promotion. Ensuring continuity of these examinations can inform the development of health policies. More frequent health education and counseling may benefit employees with elevated blood glucose levels identified during examinations.
