Future Anxiety, Depression and Stress Among Medical Students

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between future anxiety(FA), depression and stress among the students of Eskisehir Osmangazi University Faculty of Medicine(ESOGUTF). This cross - sectional study conducted in ESOGUTF students. In 2018-2019 academic year, the total number of students was 1519 and 732(48.2%) of them were reached. The questionnaire was completed by the students under the observation of the researchers. FA individuals feel anxious about a possible danger in the future; vocational dimention of FA was defined as feeling anxious about a future danger on a subject related to the profession. FA were asked in a 5-point Likert type that ranged between “never” and “always”; those who answered these questions “quite often “and “always” were considered anxious. The data were evaluated with SPSS (version 15.0) Statistical Package Program on computer. Chi-square, Student's t and Mann Whitney U tests were used for analysis. Statistical significance was accepted as p≤0.05. Among the study group 395(54.0%) of them were males. The ages of the students varied between 18-40; The mean age was 21.1 ± 2.2 years. 28 (3.8%) of the students reported that they always felt FA, and 136 (18.6%) reported that they often felt FA. It was seen that all subdimentional scores of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress -21 scale were found higher in students with FA. Future anxiety was found very common among medical students. After identifying the causes of FA, taking proper measures should be prioritized.

Tıp Fakültesi Öğrencilerinde Gelecek Kaygısı, Depresyon ve Stres İlişkisinin Değerlendirilmesi

Öz

Eskişehir Osmangazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi(ESOGÜTF) öğrencilerinde gelecek kaygısı(GK), depresyon ve stres ilişkisinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlandı. Çalışma ESOGÜTF öğrencilerinde gerçekleştirilen kesitsel tipte bir araştırmadır. Çalışma tarihlerinde öğrenim gören tüm öğrencilere ulaşılması planlanarak 2018-2019 akademik yılında öğrenim gören 1519 öğrenciden 732’(%48.2)sine ulaşıldı. Çalışmanın amacına yönelik hazırlanan anket form, araştırmacıların gözlemi altında öğrenciler tarafından dolduruldu. GK bireylerin kendini gelecekte olabilecek bir tehlike ile ilgili olarak endişeli beklenti içinde hissetmesi; mesleki GK ise bireylerin kendini mesleği ile ilişkili bir konuda gelecekte olabilecek bir tehlike ile ilgili olarak endişeli beklenti içinde hissetmesi olarak tanımlandı. Mesleki GK ve GK hiçbir zaman ve her zaman arasında değişen 5’li likert tipinde sorularak; bu sorulara oldukça sık ve her zaman olarak cevap verenler kaygılı olarak değerlendirildi. Veriler, bilgisayar ortamında SPSS(versiyon 15.0) İstatistik Paket Programında değerlendirildi. Analizlerde ki kare, student t ve Mann Whitney U testleri kullanıldı. İstatistiksel anlamlılık değeri olarak p≤0.05 kabul edildi. Çalışma grubunun 395’i(%54.0) erkekti. Öğrencilerin yaşları 18-40 arasında değişmekte olup; ortalaması 21.1±2.2 yıl idi. Öğrencilerin 28(%3.8)’i her zaman, 136(%18.6)’sı oldukça sık GK hissettiğini bildirdi. Hekimlik mesleğiyle ilişkili GK ise öğrencilerin 24(%3.3)’ü her zaman 130(%17.8)’i oldukça sık olarak hissetmekteydi. GK veya mesleki GK olan öğrencilerde Depresyon, Anksiteye, Stres -21 ölçeğinin tüm alt alanlarından alınan puan ortancalarının olmayanlara göre daha yüksek olduğu görüldü. Öğrencilerde GK ve mesleki GK oldukça sıktı. GK veya mesleki GK olanların depresyon, anksiyete ve stres düzeyleri daha yüksekti. GK nedenlerinin belirlenerek; depresyon, anksiyete ve strese yönelik tedbirlerin alınması gerektiği düşünüldü.
