Changes in Lifestyle and Habits of Grade II Medical Students During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic caused compulsory changes in the human lifestyle. Medical students have also been affected by excessive stress and anxiety due to lockdowns. Our study aimed to investigate the effects of the pandemic on second-year medical students’ lifestyle and habits. A survey consisting of 32 multiple choice or open questions was online applied to 2nd Grade Medical Students between December 22nd, 2020 – January 2nd, 2021. Received answers were recorded and analyzed. p<0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. Of the 105 medical students, 35 (33.3%) were men and 70 (66.6%) were women with a median age of 19 (range: 19-22) years. Compared to the pre-pandemic era, a significant increase was found in daily sleeping times of the students during the pandemic (p <0.05). Increased levels of anxiety was detected in 78.1% of the students compared to the pre-pandemic era, whereas 39% stated that they lost weight as there was a significant decrease in the consumption of fast food among the students (p <0.05). As a result of social media usage times, the screen time significantly increased during the pandemic (p <0.05). Compared to the pre-pandemic era, the time spent outside home and social activites significantly decreased as most of the students couldn’t continue their favourite daily activities (p <0.05). Learning efficiency of most students decreased and they spent 1-3 hours daily for education activities in addition to school time. Despite no change in their interactive participation to the lessons, the number of lessons attended decreased, and there was a concern for future competence. During the pandemic, 2nd Grade Medical Students' home stay period and screen time increased, social activities were restricted, motivation loss and future competence anxiety occured along with online medical education. Covid-19 pandemic unfavorably affected medical students' life styles.
