Beyond an Institutionalized Learning Environment: Fostering Interactions and Learning Using Synchronous and Asynchronous Messaging Systems

Abstract

This paper seeks to examine the use of synchronous and asynchronous messaging systems with distance education students and the implications for student interaction and learning in the institutionalized Integrated Virtual Learning Environment (IVLE) of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU). It will present, as a case in point, the learning experiences of UPOU students in obtaining tutorial support and using the IVLE and alternative synchronous and asynchronous messaging systems to maximize and facilitate online activities involving the Faculty-in-Charge, Tutor, UPOU support staff and the students.
