REPRESENTING OLD AGE IN CONTEMPORARY CINEMA: A THEMATIC ANALYSIS OF THREE INTERNATIONAL FILMS

Abstract

Dünya nüfusu hızla yaşlanırken, ileri yaş grupları sağlık, bakım ve toplumsal katılım politikalarının merkezine yerleşmektedir. Buna karşın yaşa dayalı önyargılar, gündelik ayrımcı pratikler ve temsil boşlukları yaşlı bireylerin sesini ve görünürlüğünü sıklıkla bastırır. Sinema, yaşlanma deneyimini dramatize eden güçlü bir kültürel alan olarak bu önyargıları pekiştirebilir ya da dönüştürebilir. Yaşlı bireylerin sinemadaki temsilleri, toplumsal önyargıların, kültürel normların ve bireysel deneyimlerin iç içe geçtiği bir anlatı alanı sunar. Bu çalışma, sinema filmlerinde yaşlılık deneyiminin nasıl inşa edildiğini açıklığa kavuşturmayı amaçlamaktadır.
Araştırma, birinci olarak sinemada yaşlı karakterlerin hangi temsili kalıplar içinde yer aldığını, ikinci olarak bu temsillerin yaş ayrımcılığına dair ne tür göstergeler içerdiğini ve üçüncü olarak yaşlı karakterlerin anlatının merkezine yerleştirildiği yapımlarda temsil stratejilerinin nasıl farklılaştığını ortaya koymayı hedefleyen üç temel soruya yanıt aramıştır.
Bu bağlamda, amaçlı örneklem yoluyla The Straight Story (1999), Amour (2012) ve The Father (2020) filmleri seçilmiştir. Her üç yapım da yüksek izleyici erişimi ve uluslararası eleştirel beğeniye sahip olması nedeniyle analiz kapsamına dahil edilmiştir. Tematik analiz yöntemi ile, iki araştırmacı bağımsız kodlama yaparak veri bütünlüğü sağlamış; filmlerin anlatı, diyalog ve görsel öğeleri üzerinden tekrar eden örüntüler tespit edilmiştir. Yaşlılıkta özerklik ve karar verme hakkı; Algı, gerçeklik ve kırılganlık ve Toplumsal izolasyon ve görünmezlik temaları üzerinden değerlendirme yapılmıştır
Bulgular, ana akım sinemada yaşlı karakterlerin hâlâ zihinsel ve fiziksel yetersizlik, yalnızlık ve toplumsal dışlanma kalıplarıyla sunulduğunu göstermiştir. Özellikle karar alma süreçleri, algı ve gerçeklik çatışmaları ile toplumsal izolasyon eksenlerinde zıt temsiller gözlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak, sinemada yaşlı bireylere yönelik anlatıların hem sınırlayıcı stereotipleri sürdüğü hem de dönüştürücü potansiyeller barındırdığı belirlenmiştir. Bu durum, film üretim süreçlerinde yaş ayrımcılığına dirençli, çoğulcu ve kapsayıcı temsiller geliştirme gerekliliğini vurgulamaktadır.
