Awareness of Diabetic Retinopathy on Patients Visiting Endocrinology Clinic

Abstract

Aim: Surveying patients with diabetes asking them questions about diabetic retinopathy to evaluate their awareness on the illness and to investigate the factors influencing their awereness. Material and Methods: We distrubuted a specifically prepared questionnaire to randomly selected patients who visited the endocrinology clinic. The questionnaire consisted of three main sections including questions about demographic characteristics, risk factors for diabetic retinopathy and awareness of diabetic retinopathy Results: We evaluated a total of 118 completed forms in our study. The results indicated that 8.5 % of the subjects were unaware of diabetic retinopathy. Although awereness of the patients on diabetic retinopathy increased with education level, the observation wasn't statically significant. The results also indicated that 32.4% of the remaining 108 patients, who were aware of the eye complications of diabetes, preferred not to have regular eye examinations. While 106 patients were educated about diabetic eye complications by a doctor of internal medicine, none of them were found to be informed about diabetic retinopathy by media (newspapers, broadcasting, etc.). 20 out of 94 subjects, who had an eye examination by an ophthalmologist for diabetic retinopathy, were unaware if they had diabetic retinopathy or not. Conclusion: We found a high retinopathy awareness (%91) among patients with diabetes but most of these patients preferred not to have regular eyes examinations. The doctors together with the media should play a more important role in educating patients with diabetes about diabetic retinopathy and its complications due to late diagnosis. Endokrinoloji Polikliniğine Başvuran Hastalarda Diyabetik Retinopati Bilinci

Abstract

Amaç: Diyabetik hastaların diyabetik retinopati ile igili bilgi ve bilinç düzeylerini değerlendirebilmek amacıyla endokrin polikliniğine başvuran hastalara diyabetik retinopati ile ilgili sorular yöneltmek ve diyabetik retinopati konusundaki bilinç düzeyini etkileyen temel faktörleri irdelemek. Gereç ve Yöntem: Endokrinoloji Polikliniğine Kasım –Aralık 2006 tarihleri arasında başvuran diyabetik hastalara çalışma için özel olarak hazırlanmış değerlendirme formları dağıtıldı. Değerlendirme formu; kişisel özellikler, diyabetik retinopati için risk faktörü taşıma ve diyabetik retinopati bilincine yönelik sorular olmak üzere üç ana bölümden oluşmaktaydı. Bulgular: Toplam 118 olgu çalışma kapsamına alındı. Katılımcıların %8.5'inin “diyabetin gözü etkilediğini biliyor musunuz? ” şeklindeki soruya “hayır” yanıtı verdiği belirlendi. Genel olarak hastaların eğitim düzeyleri arttıkça bu soruya verdikleri olumlu yanıtlar artmasına rağmen bu oran istatistiksel olarak anlamlı değildi. Olumlu cevap veren toplam 108 hastadan 35'inin (%32.4) bu bilgiye sahip olmasına rağmen düzenli göz kontrollerine gitmediği tespit edildi. 106 hastanın bu bilgiye dahiliye uzmanı tarafından ulaştırıldığı belirlenirken, hiçbir hastanın görsel-yazılı medya aracılığıyla bilgi edinemediği belirlendi. Oftalmoloğa başvuran 94 hastadan 20 tanesi (%21.2) muayene olmasına rağmen kendilerinde retinopati olup olmadığı konusunda bilgi sahibi değillerdi. Sonuç: Diyabetik hastaların, diyabetin göz komplikasyonlarıyla gidebilen bir hastalık olabileceği konusundaki bilgilerinin yeterli (%91) olduğu ancak önemli bir oranının göz muayenesi olmadığı tespit edildi. Sağlık çalışanlarının yanı sıra görsel-yazılı medyanın da diyabetik retinopatinin geç tanı ve tedavisinin doğurabileceği olumsuz sonuçlar hakkında hastaları daha fazla bilgilendirmesi gerekmektedir.
