It has become clear in recent years that rural tourism practices are essential not only for economic development but also for the protection of cultural heritage and the promotion of environmental sustainability. This study conducted a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of rural tourism studies to map the research development, identify critical contributions, identify the most published authors, countries, and collaborations in the field, and highlight emerging trends and gaps. The analysis covers 1760 publications between 1986 and 2024 and August 2024, using data from major academic databases such as Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus. Tools such as VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used to visualize the research data. The results show that there has been considerable progress in rural tourism research, as well as substantial contributions from various countries and institutions. The main themes of the research include sustainable development, cultural heritage, and the role of rural tourism in economic diversification. This study also provides a detailed overview of collaboration networks and research hotspots, identifying key authors and the most highly cited publications. The study provides valuable information for researchers and sector representatives, helping to fill a field gap and guiding future research and strategic planning in rural tourism.
