Adaptation and Psychometric Properties of Internet Parenting Style Scale among Indonesian Adolescents

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of online risks that threaten adolescents’ psychological well-being underscores the importance of parental mediation, or Internet Parenting Style (IPS). However, instruments designed to assess parents’ tendencies in applying Internet Parenting Style from the perspective of Indonesian adolescents remain limited. Therefore, this research aims to adapt the Internet Parenting Style measurement instrument to reflect adolescents’ perspectives in the Indonesian cultural context. The adaptation process followed the stages of Beaton et al., namely (1) initial translation, (2) translation synthesis, (3) reverse translation, (4) expert review, and (5) instrument trial. The trial was carried out on 600 adolescents in Kediri City. The results showed that each dimension of Internet Parenting Style had a reliability coefficient (CR) ≥ 0.70, namely encouragement (0.709), concern (0.803), monitoring (0.786), and consent (0.900). The construct validity was assessed through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), yielding factor loadings of 0.639-0.979 across all items. The suitability analysis using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) showed that the model was in the fit category. Therefore, the adapted instrument developed is valid and reliable for measuring Indonesian adolescents’ perspectives on the tendency to use Internet Parenting Style. In conclusion, this research shows the tendency of parents in Kediri City and Regency to apply Internet Parenting Style of “parental concerns.”
