Defining Sexual Abuse and The Following Procedure

Abstract

The concept of sexual abuse has been a very popular term among mental health professionals and non-professionals. The media covered the term so notoriously that everyone has some idea about this issue. In fact, the history of children sexual traumatization is as old as humankind. Research shows that this problem has been documented in all cultures and social classes, ascertaining that this issue has a universal dimension. Therefore, it needs to be more clearly defined and understood by professionals. The purpose of this literature review is therefore to provide the most current research findings in the area of childhood sexual abuse. First, definition of sexual abuse was discussed with respect to controversies of the defining concepts. Then, recent prevalence and incidence rates in Turkey and other countries are presented. More detailed attention was given to the concerns and problems that had not been dealt with in previous the literature.
