Developing Family Relationship Scale for Children

Abstract

In this study The Family Relationship Scale for Children was developed for fourth and fifth grade elementary school students based on the characteristics of healthy families. The item pool was established using the McMaster Model and the characteristics of healthy families were defined as used by Krysan, Moore and Zill (1990). Following receipt of feedback from eight colleagues a draft instrument containing 56 items was prepared. The instrument was administered to an initial group of participants (n=37) for the purpose of assessing basic understandability of the items. The second and third groups were used to assess construct validity through both exploratory (n=590) and confirmatory factor analysis (n=300). After Varimax rotation, two factors were identified as discouraging (10 items) and supportive family relationships (10 items). Confirmatory factor analysis resulted in a good of fit index which was acceptable. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients factor 1 ranged between .82-.84 and for factor 2, between .76 and .78. for two groups, respectecly. These values suggest that the scale may relevant for use for children. Findings were discussed according to literature and some suggestions for further research were made.
