VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY STUDIES OF EARTHQUAKE STRESS COPING SCALE (ESCS)
Abstract
Although a considerable number of scales which were developed to assess the coping with stressful situations exist in the relevant literature, no scale was found regarding assessment of individuals’ coping with earthquake stress. Therefore, it was aimed to develop a scale in order to assess the individuals’ strategies for coping with earthquake stress in the present study. This study was carried out after the 1999 Marmara and Düzce earthquakes which occurred in the same region in three months intervals and caused a high death toll and destruction. Data were obtained based on two samplings of university students (n1=300; n2=176). Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses were conducted to determine the factor structure of the Coping with Earthquake Stress Scale (CESS). The results of analyses revealed that the CESS consists of three sub-dimensions which are Positive Reappraisal, Seeking Social Support, and Religious Coping. Furthermore, Beck’s Depression Scale was also studied to assess the validity of the CESS. The findings of the study, suggestions for future research, and limitations were also discussed.
