An Intervention for School Counselors: Pair Counseling

Abstract

Nowadays, school counselors spend most of their time for students having emotional and behavioral problems. It is observed that most problems of these children are related to interpersonal relationships. For this pUlpose, individual and group counsefing servic'es are presented to these students in schools. However, cow1Seling services sometimes may be ineffective in the treatment of interpersonal relationship problems caused by social and cognitive insufficiencies. In this condition, pair counseling as a dijferent intervention ma)' be used according to students' needs. Pair counseling is aimed to foster interpersonal development of children having insufficient social and cognitive capacities for estabfishing intimate relationships. Pair counseling is a psychosocial intervention where play is the center two children are matched in the counseling refationship. In this paper, definition, aim, and histarical development of pair counseling, it's comparative with pair therapy, characteristics of children, counseling process, techniques and the role of the counselor are presented.
