Adaptation of the Short Form of the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire into Turkish: A Validity and Reliability Study
Abstract
The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire short form-OHQ-SF (Hills & Argyle, 2002) is a recently developed eight-item measure of happiness. In the present study, the OHQ-SF was translated into Turkish and psychometric properties of the questionnaire were assessed. The OHQ-SF was completed by a sample of 532 Turkish university students from Sakarya University. In the research, as data collection tools, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, Life Orientation Test and the Zung Depression Scale were used as well as the OHQ-SF. The psychometric properties of the OHQ-SF were analyzed by means of item analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, criterion related validity, internal consistency and test-retest methods. The exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis results demonstrated that the questionnaire had a unidimensional structure. Within the scope of the criterion related validity, positively significant correlations were found between the OHQ-SF and the Satisfaction with Life Scale and the Life Orientation Test. And negatively significant correlation was found between OHQ-SF and the Zung Depression Scale. The OHQ-SF’s internal consistency coefficient and test-retest reliability coefficient were determined to be .74 and .85, respectively. In conclusion, OHQ-SF can be recommended as a reliable and valid measure for happiness in Turkish university students.
