Effectiveness of a Psycho-Education Application on Self-Esteem and Irrational Beliefs of Female College Students

Abstract

Self-esteem affects one’s behaviors, experiences, life satisfaction, choices, social and close relationships, how she/he treats others and is treated by others, and in everything she/he does (Sanford & Donovan, 1999). Erickson, Horan, and Hackett (1991) stated that low self-esteem is caused by irrational beliefs. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of a psycho-education program based on cognitive-behavioral therapy on self-esteem and irrational beliefs of female college students studying at a mid-size state university. The research included three groups: Experimental group (n= 7), placebo control group (n= 9) and control group (n= 11). Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Irrational Beliefs Scale were the instruments of the study. The data were analyzed by two-factor ANOVA for mixed designs (Split-Plot) (SPANOVA). Group differences were investigated by using Bonferroni test. Results of the analysis indicated that the psycho-education program based on cognitive-behavioral therapy was effective in improving self-esteem level, and decreasing irrational beliefs. While the effectiveness of the program was retained at follow-up test regarding self-esteem, it was not retained regarding irrational beliefs. There were no group differences at follow-up test. Since self-esteem and irrational beliefs begin to evolve in early years of life, and there is a strong relationship between self-esteem level and mental health indicators, preventive studies become more vital. Thus, counseling services at schools may promote programs to boost self-esteem and decrease irrational beliefs of students.
