Examining the Predictors of Subjective and Psychological Well-Being of University Students

Year 2007, Volume: 3 Issue: 27, 43 - 65, 11.06.2007

Abstract

In this study, it has been aimed to determine the rate of how university students’ subjective and psychological well-being are predicted by their level of extraversion, neurouticism, locus of control, learned resourcefulness, socio-economic status, gender, health situations and satisfaction of social interactions, recreation activities and academic conditions. The study was conducted with 500 university students. 205 of whom were female and 295 of whom were male. “Ryff’s Scales of Psychological Well-Being” were used to determine the level of students’ psychological well-being. Similarly; in order to determine their subjective well-being level, both “Positive-Negative Affect Schedule” and “Life Satisfaction Scale” were used. “Scales of Psychological Well-Being” were adapted into Turkish by the researcher in the present study. Additionally, “Eysenck Personality Questionnaire”, “Rotter Internal-External Control Scale” and “Rosenbaum Learned Resourcefulness Inventory” were used. The results of stepwise regression analyses show that the satisfaction with the interaction of friends was not a significant predictor of subjective well-being. But, other variables mentioned explained 63.9 % of the total variance. Besides, as for the results of the stepwise regression analyses, it was revealed that perceived healthiness, socio-economic status and academic achievement did not significantly predict psychological well-being. But, it was observed that other variables explained 59 % of the total variance.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinde Öznel ve Psikolojik İyi Olmanın Yordayıcılarının İncelenmesi

Year 2007, Volume: 3 Issue: 27, 43 - 65, 11.06.2007

Abstract

Ara tırmada üniversite öğrencilerinin psikolojik iyi olma düzeylerini belirlemek amacıyla Ryff’ın (1989a) “Psikolojik yi Olma Ölçekleri”, öznel iyi olma düzeylerini belirlemek için “Olumlu-Olumsuz Duygu Ölçe i” ve “Ya am Doyumu Ölçe i” kullanılmı tır. Ayrıca “Eysenck Ki ilik Envanteri”, “Rotter ç-Dı Kontrol Oda ı Ölçe i” ve “Rosenbaum Ö renilmi Güçlülük Envanteri” kullanılmıştır. A amalı regresyon analizi sonucunda arkadaşlarla ili kilerden algılanan ho nutlu un öznel iyi olmanın anlamlı yordayıcısı olmadı ı görülmü tür. Ancak di er de i kenlerin tamamının toplam varyansın %63.9’unu açıkladı ı belirlenmi tir. Ayrıca a amalı regresyon analizi sonucunda algılanan sa lık durumu, sosyo-ekonomik statü ve akademik ba arıdan algılanan ho nutlu un psikolojik iyi olmanın anlamlı yordayıcıları olmadı ı bulunmu tur. Ancak di er değişkenlerin tamamı toplam varyansın %59’unu açıklamaktadır.
