The Relationship Between Psychological Hardiness and Perceived Social Support of University Students

Abstract

In this study about the relationship between psychological hardiness and perceived social support. 140 (66 female, 74 male) university students completed Psychological Hardiness-IIIR and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. The relationship
between psychological hardiness and perceived social support has been analyzed with using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient method. As a result of the research it has been seen that there is a meaningful relationship between psychological hardiness and perceived social support.

  • Social support is the degree to benefit from social sources (mother, father, wife, lover, friends, teachers...) by the means of trusted relations. It has been stated that social support sources support the individual in different shapes, and most common ones are material, emotional, and mental supports.
  • In literature (Kobasa, 1979; Kobasa ve Puccetti, 1983; Folkman ve Lazarus, 1984; Wiebe, 1991; Patterson, 1992; Florian, Mikulincer ve Taubman, 1995; Pengilly, 1997; Pengilly ve Dowd, 2000; Wallace, Bisconti ve Bergeman, 2001), researches about the relationship between stress and illness are focused on buffer effect of psychological variables socail support and psychological hardiness.
  • Purpose of this research is to find out if there is a meaningful relationship between psychological hardiness and perceived social support for university students. METHOD

  • As a result of the analysis that have been due to the purposes of the research, correlation coefficient between total points the students get from, Psychological Hardiness-IIIR, and total points the students get from Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support is meaningful in a sinifance level of 0.01 (r=.83). Abstract

Bu çalısmada psikolojik dayanıklılık ile algılanan sosyal destek arasındaki iliski incelenmistir. Arastırmada 140 (66 kız, 74 erkek) üniversite ögrencisi Psikolojik Dayanıklılık Ölçegi III-R ve Çok Boyutlu Algılanan Sosyal Destek Ölçegini cevaplamıslardır. Psikolojik dayanıklılık ile algılanan sosyal destek arasındaki iliski Pearson Momentler Çarpımı Korelasyon Katsayısı ile incelenmistir. Arastırmanın sonucunda psikolojik dayanıklılık ile algılanan sosyal destek arasında anlamlı bir
iliski oldugu görülmüstür.
