Clustering Provinces by IPTV Users’ Viewing Profiles

Abstract

One-sided and terrestrial broadcasting, which the audience can influence only by changing channels, has taken on a different understanding by IPTV service taking the audience's preferences and tendencies into consideration. The one-way transmission from the broadcasting channel to the audience in traditional television broadcasting turns into an interactive environment that provides a space for movement for the audience's preferences in IPTV technology. In the study, the data set was compiled to cover Türkiye between February and May 2018. However, after the examination of The Set Top Box (STB) logs raw data, only one week period (31 March - 06 April 2018) could be analysed because of the data quality, completeness, and representativeness. A huge and non-classified IPTV STB log data has been observed, End Distributor Server (POP Point, approximately 31 000 records) data is re-classified in compliance with the Turkish Statistical Institute (Turkstat) Statistical Regional Units Classification (NUTS). The average duration of viewing of IPTV national channels in Turkey is 4 hours and 28 minutes per day, Furthermore, it was determined that the average amount of television watched per person in Turkey during prime time (18:00-23:00) is 52 minutes. As a result of cluster analysis by category viewing times and rates, Ağrı, Amasya, Çankırı, Düzce, Hakkâri, Iğdır, Şırnak and Zonguldak provinces differed from the others. By using the category viewing time per active user at the provincial level, Cluster analysis was applied to the provinces with the k-means method and the results were shown on the map.
