Nature’s Untamed Voice: A Critical Ecofeminist Reading of Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God

Abstract

This paper studies Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God through an ecofeminist perspective by exploring the interconnections between nature, women’s oppression, and patriarchal power structures. By integrating insights from ecofeminist theory with a close reading of Hurston’s text, the study argues that the novel portrays nature as a nurturing and transformative force and exposes its capacity for violence and devastation as reflective of broader patriarchal domination. Hurston’s narrative challenges the traditional dualisms of man versus nature and male versus female by revealing how both the environment and women are subjugated under the same oppressive socio-cultural regimes. The analysis demonstrates that Hurston uses natural imagery as a metaphor for the struggles and resilience of her female protagonist. This dual portrayal of nature underscores an ecofeminist critique of a patriarchal thought that exploits both natural resources and women’s bodies, ultimately advocating for an ethic of interconnected liberation based on reciprocity, care, and mutual respect. Through a comprehensive discussion of key passages and theoretical perspectives, this paper aims to illuminate how Hurston’s work challenges the established norms of gender and environmental exploitation. The study contributes to the ongoing scholarly debate by highlighting the relevance of ecofeminism in reimagining the relationship between humanity and nature by presenting a move towards more equitable and sustainable practices.
