Abstract

Bu makale, uluslararası haber ajanlarından Reuters ve Anadolu Ajansının Gazze merkezli haber metinleri karşılaştırmalı olarak incelemektedir. Anadolu Ajansı ve Reuters'ın İngilizce sitelerinden son 1 yılda Gazze kelimesinin haber metni içinde yer aldığı ve ulaşılabilen haberler toplanmıştır. Her iki ajansın Gazze ile ilgili İngilizce haber metinleri, ön işleme ve metin temizleme aşamalarından sonra LDA yöntemiyle konu modellemesi uygulanmıştır. Böylece tematik dağılım, duygu ve söylem analizine dair veriler elde edilmiştir. Bulgular, Reuters'ın haberlerinde diplomasi, ateşkes süreçleri, uluslararası hukuk ve devletler arası ilişkiler gibi temaların Anadolu Ajansında ise insani yardım, çocuklar, siviller ve etik sorumluluklar şeklinde temaların öne çıktığını göstermektedir. Dolayısıyla bu farklılaşma söz konusu iki ajansın Gazze’de yaşananları farklı biçimlerde anlamlandırdıklarını ortaya koymaktadır. Reuters'ın Gazze meselesini dünyadan haberler şeklinde bir perspektifin parçası olarak sunması, insani dramların daha az görünmesi, küresel siyasî ve diplomatik süreçler arasında Gazze’nin soyutlanması durumuna neden olabilmektedir.

Abstraction Focused on Diplomacy, or Intensification Focused on the Humanitarian Crisis? AI-Powered Theme Analysis in Reuters and Anadolu Agency in the Context of the Gaza Crisis

Abstract

This article comparatively examines news texts focusing on Gaza from the international news agencies Reuters and Anadolu Agency. News articles containing the word “Gaza” within their text and accessible from both Anadolu Agency’s and Reuters’ English websites over the last year were collected. After pre-processing and text cleaning stages, the collected English news texts from both agencies concerning Gaza were subjected to topic modeling using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) method. Data concerning thematic distribution, sentiment, and discourse analysis were thus obtained. The findings indicate that themes such as diplomacy, ceasefire processes, international law, and interstate relations are prominent in Reuters’ news reports, while themes related to humanitarian aid, children, civilians, and ethical responsibilities are emphasized in Anadolu Agency’s reports. Consequently, this differentiation reveals that the two agencies in question frame and interpret the events occurring in Gaza in distinct ways. The framing of the Gaza issue by Reuters as merely a component of a wider global news perspective, resulting in the diminished visibility of humanitarian dramas, may lead to Gaza’s abstraction within the context of global political and diplomatic processes.
