The Importance Of Literacy
Abstract
Richard Hoggart founded in 1964 the Centre of Contemporary Cultural Works at the Birmingham University. Although being an educator he was not remote to the labour world. He lived amongst them and had the opportunity to observe them closely. Being a very good observer Hoggart gave great importance to cultural researches. In his work named “The Uses of Literacy” he dealt upon the power and impact of the means of communication and he dealt with the issue of how much the culture spread from these means had an effect on the labour class. As a result, he claimed that the impact of the means of communication on the public had been exaggerated and put forward the fact that the public had remained very bonded to its own culture and that it protected itself from the changes and the resulting effects thereafter. As a matter of fact, he expressed that the public had been living its culture within its micro atmosphere and added that researches had to be focused upon this issue.
