Year 2025, Volume: 36 Issue: 3, 553 - 570, 29.07.2025

Abstract

Abstract

This review article examines the topic of family estrangement. Family estrangement, which is defined as the voluntary and conscious estrangement of the individual from their family, can be physical or emotional. In order to examine the studies carried out on the concept of family estrangement, a literature review was conducted between October-November 2024 using the keywords 'Family Estrangement', 'Parent Estrangement', 'Sibling Estrangement', and 'Estranged Parent' in the Web of Science database. The studies reached as a result of the literature review were evaluated according to the inclusion criteria and 31 studies were included in the analysis. The document analysis method was used for the study. According to the findings obtained from the examination of the studies, it was found that the sample group of most of the studies was between 0-50 participants, the study group consisted of adult children, and qualitative research methods were used as research methods. When analyzed according to the years, it was found that most of the studies were conducted within the last six years, and when analyzed according to the subjects, it was found that the most discussed subject was the experience and perceptions of adult children of family estrangement, and the least discussed subject was the perceptions of others about the concept of family estrangement. The findings were discussed and suggestions were provided in this regard.
