Abstract
Avrupa'da, Mısır tarihi ve medeniyetine ilgi Rönesans devrinde, antik grek yazarların incelenmesiyle, başlamış olup, XVII. yüzyılda hiyeroglif yazıların deşifre denemeleri yapılmış, ama genellikle ön yargılı davranışlar sonucu hayal gücüne dayalı yanlış yorumlara gidilmiş ve bu yüzden çalışmalar verimsiz kalmıştır. Araştırmaların sağlam temellere dayandırılması Napolyon'un 1798'deki Mısır seferinden sonra başlamıştır. Bu sefer sonunda "Mısır'ın Tasviri" adlı eserin yazılmasından ve Reşit'te bulunan hiyeroglif, demotik ve eski yunan yazılarında üç dili havi, V. Ptoleme devrine ait "Rozet Taşı"nın bulunmasından sonra araştırmalar ve arkeolojik çalışmalar hız kazanmıştır.
