MÖ 4. yüzyılın sonunda Bayraklı’daki eski yerinden Pagos (bugünkü Kadifekale) eteklerine taşınan antik Smyrna’da
Meter kültü Hellenistik ve Roma Dönemleri boyunca kentin en önemli kültlerinden biri olmuştur. Yazılı kaynaklar
ve arkeolojik veriler Meter’in kentte politik rolü olan bir tanrısal varlık olduğunu göstermektedir. Tanrıçanın tapınağı
Metroon’dan pek çok antik kaynakta bahsedilmekte ise de bu yapı henüz arkeolojik olarak tespit edilememiştir.
Bu tapınak dışında kentte Meter kültüne ait olması muhtemel bir doğa kutsal alanı ile ilgili izler de yakın dönemde
keşfedilmiştir. Bu çalışma yazılı kaynaklar ve arkeolojik buluntular üzerinden tanrıçanın kentteki kültü ile ilgili genel
bir çerçeve çizmeyi amaçlamaktadır.
