Türk arkeolojisinde son birkaç yıl içinde ard arda gelen kayıplar büyük bir boşluk bırakmıştı; bunların acısı içimizde tazeyken, 19 Ocak 2008 tarihinde Prof. Dr. Ufuk Esin'in kaybıyla Türk arkeolojisi yeni bir sarsıntı geçirmiştir. Türkiye Bilimler Akademisi'nin kurucu üyesi olan Prof. Dr. Ufuk Esin,1 kuruluşu diğer ülkelere göre çok geç kalmış olan Akademinin, hızla gelişerek bilim dünyasında saygın bir yer kazanması için büyük bir özveriyle elinden gelen her türlü katkıyı yapmış, belki bundan da önemlisi Akademinin ülkemizde tanınarak kabul görmesi için olağanüstü bir çaba göstermiştir.
