Tandır ovens which are still in use in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia are usually seen as a part of pastoral life. Architectural plans of the village households in these regions indicate a separate room for tandır ovens was built and called as "tandır house" by the local people. In the meantime, some other tandır ovens in the courtyards are being used during the summer period. The existence of tandır ovens is also known from the archaeological excavations in these regions. However, in the archaeological records, no detailed information has been given about their producing techniques and/or functions. In this paper, firstly the production techniques of modern tandırs, construction methods of the ovens, using process and socio-cultural structure were evaluated, and the regional diversities were determined. Additionally, the existence of tandır ovens from past to the present day have been discussed chronologically. Lastly, the ethnoarchaeological assessments have been provided.
