The chaos, intensity, and dynamism of the city increase the stress on people living in the city, and thus people start to
look for places where they can breathe. The closeness perception formed by the interior spaces, causes the people to
turn to the outdoor spaces. The open spaces, courtyards, urban courtyards jammed between densely built urban leave
a positive impact on the people in this regard. In particular, the urban courtyards, which provide a common space
for various functions of the city dwellers who are restricted to one or more structures, structural element or urban
element, and are compatible with the urban context, are the outdoor spaces which may include public or semi-public
features that open to streets, boulevards and squares within the city.
This study, which has been performed within the framework of contributions of urban courtyards into the city and
their positive effects on the city dweller, aimed to perform spatial analysis of urban courtyards with different scales,
different functions and different characteristics in the city of Afyon. Within the scope of the study, the spatial analyses
of courtyards of the structures with functions of semi-public, public inn, madrasa and shopping center located in the
city of Afyon have been performed. The spatial analyses of the courtyards have been tabulated under subtitles such
as the form, the nature, the shape and the limitations of the selected courtyard within the scope of formal features;
the position of the courtyard in the city, its position relative to the structures, its relationship with surrounding and
settlement aspects within scope of environmental relations; courtyard outfits, material, color, texture, plan diagram
within the framework of the physical features. The psychological effects of the courtyards have been measured as
a result of interviews conducted with users of these courtyard selected within the scope of the study performed in
Afyon. The courtyards included to the study have been selected as Stone Madrasa courtyard, Stone Inn courtyard,
Mevlevi Mosque courtyard, Mihrioglu courtyard and Afium shopping center courtyard among different types of
structures. The fact that the scales of the courtyards selected, their user groups and qualifications are different from
each other has changed the dimension of the spatial analysis, and in this context, the spatial level of performance has
been measured in line with the differentiating physical, structural and environmental characteristics of the courtyards.
