The Effect of Obesity Which Started at Young Adulthood on Metabolic Parameters

Abstract

Aim: In this study, we aimed to examine the current metabolic parameters of the subjects with obesity whether they were overweigt/obese (Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥25) or normal weight (BMI<25) in their young adulthood.Material and Methods: The files of the subjects aged 30 years old or higher and who admitted the obesity policlinic of Kartal Dr Lutfi Kirdar Training and Research Hospital between January 2014 and January 2015 were retrospectively evaluated. Patients with known chronic diseases (chronic inflammatuar, infectious, endorinologic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and psychiatric diseases) and patients who were using any drugs were not included in the study. A total of 204 subjects with obesity were included in the study. These subjects were questioned for their weights between the ages 18-20. The anthropometric measurements and biochemical results of the subjects at the first admission were evaluated. Subjects were divided into two groups (Group 1; subjects whom were overweight/obese in their young adulthood, Group 2; subjects who had normal weight in their yound adulthood). Results: Of the 204 subjects with obesity, 180 (88%) were female and 24 (12%) were male. Group 1 included 68 subjects and Group 2 included 136 subjects. The median age was higher in Group 1 than in Group 2 (40 vs 43 years; (P=0.006) ). The current median weight of the Group 1 was higher than Group 2 (104 vs 89 kg; (P<0.001)). The current median waist circumference was higher in Group 1 than in Group 2 (110 vs 104 cm; (P=0.002)). The median high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level was lower in Group 1 than in Group 2 (46 vs 50 mg/dL; (P=0.025)). The incidence of metabolic syndrome was similar in two groups (58% vs 56%; (P=0.841)). Percent body fat, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose and insulin levels, homeostasis model assesment of insülin resistance (HOMA-IR), insulin sensitivity index (ISI), uric asid levels, leucocyte count, c-reactif protein (CRP) and sedimentation rate were not different in two groups. Conclusion: In this study it was shown that subjects with higher BMI in their young adulthood have higher current BMI compared to subjects who had normal BMI in their young adulthood. Considering the health effects of obesity started at early ages, fighting aganist obesity must be the main objective of protective medical care
