Eyewitness Accounts of 19th Century Erzurum Earthquakes

Abstract

Erzurum, located in an earthquake zone, has been exposed to many earthquakes throughout history. While Erzurum was the epicenter of some of these earthquakes, a significant number occurred in the surrounding regions and affected Erzurum. In this article, the accounts of local and especially foreign observers reflected in the sources of the period about seven earthquakes experienced during the 19th century are discussed. These observers, who were in the region when these earthquakes occurred or in the days following the aftershocks, gave essential information and vivid descriptions of the earthquakes in Erzurum in their texts, such as travelogues, letters, and reports. Among those who provided such accounts were many journalists, consuls, missionaries, and scientists. In this article, the accounts of these foreign observers are presented, as well as complementary information reflected in the Ottoman documents of the period and the writings of statesmen living at the time.

Görgü Tanıklarına Göre 19. Yüzyıl Erzurum Depremleri

Abstract

Deprem bölgesi üzerinde yer alan Erzurum şehri, tarih boyunca çok sayıda depreme maruz kalmıştır. Bu depremlerden bir kısmının merkez üssü Erzurum iken, önemli bir kısmı çevre bölgelerde meydana gelmiş ve Erzurum’u da etkilemiştir. Bu makalede, 19. yüzyıl boyunca yaşanmış olan yedi deprem hakkında yerli ve özellikle yabancı gözlemcilerin dönemin kaynaklarına yansıyan anlatımları ele alınmıştır. Bu depremlerin meydana geldiği veya artçıların yaşandığı takip eden günlerde bölgede bulunmuş olan bu gözlemciler, yazmış oldukları seyahatname, mektup ve rapor gibi metinlerde Erzurum depremleri hakkında son derece önemli bilgiler vermiş ve canlı anlatımlar yapmışlardır. Bu tarz anlatımları yapanlar arasında çok sayıda gazeteci, konsolos, misyoner ve bilim insanı yer almaktadır. Bu makalede, bahsedilen yabancı gözlemcilerin anlatımları aktarıldığı gibi, dönemin Osmanlı belgelerine yansıyan tamamlayıcı bilgilere ve o dönemde yaşayan devlet adamlarının yazdıklarına da yer verilmiştir.
