Crime News in New Media and Indirect Victimization in Everyday Life

Abstract

In the process of transformation from Society 4.0 towards Society 5.0 where communication technologies have gained a high momentum, the news media have unconventionally assumed a distinct character in the context of crime, guilt and victims of crime. The effect of new media, which intensively uses crime and violence on the dissemination, access/facilitation and reproduction of crime is not negligible. The prevalence of crime-related content within new media has made it more commonplace and normalized the idea of crime in individuals’ daily lives. This circumstance can lead to the appearance of novel forms of victimization in various situations or categories. In the process of reproduction and circulation of crime contents, the individual experiences the feelings of the victim indirectly with the fear that s/he will be exposed to crime, although s/he is not directly exposed to it. From this point of view, the subject of the study is the indirect victimization that occurs in daily life with the influence of the media. In the first stage, this article discusses the process of penetration of the criminal contents circulating in the media into the daily life by creating the fear of crime. The relationship between the media and the fear of crime is addressed within the framework of the right realist approach. The impact of news about crime and violence is interpreted through the moral panic theory of symbolic interactionism. The second stage is the analysis of the media news in question. The qualitative research technique of content analysis was used to analyze the news related to crime and violence, while purposeful sampling, a type of nonprobability sample, was employed in the selection of media news. The findings drawn from the analysis suggest that the information related to crime and violence in the media news penetrates daily life and causes an indirect experience by generalizing the perpetrator/victim profile. Thus, the purpose of this is to analyze and reconsider the definition and scale of the victimization phenomenon.

Yeni Medyada Suç Haberleri ve Gündelik Hayatta Dolaylı Mağduriyet

Abstract

İletişim teknolojilerinin yüksek hız kazandığı Toplum 4.0’dan, Toplum 5.0’a doğru gidilen süreçte geleneksel olandan farklı bir biçimde yeni medya; suç, suçluluk ve suç mağdurları bağlamında farklı bir niteliğe bürünmüştür. Suç ve şiddet olaylarını yoğun bir şekilde kullanan yeni medyanın; suçun yaygınlaştırılmasında, erişiminde/kolaylaştırılmasında ve yeniden üretimindeki etkisi göz ardı edilemez boyutlardadır. Yeni medya aracılığıyla suça ilişkin içeriklerin bireyin gündelik hayatını her zaman olduğundan daha fazla etkilemesi, sıradanlaştırılmasını ya da kanıksanmasını beraberinde getirmektedir. Bu durumun olağan sonucu, farklı bağlamlarda ya da türlerde yeni mağduriyetlerin ortaya çıkması olarak nitelendirilebilir. Suç içeriklerinin yeniden üretimi ve dolaşımı sürecinde birey, doğrudan suça maruz kalmasa bile suça maruz kalacağı korkusu ile dolaylı olarak mağdur deneyimi yaşamaktadır. Buradan hareketle çalışmanın konusu gündelik hayatta medya etkisiyle ortaya çıkan dolaylı mağduriyetlerdir. İlk aşamada, medyada dolaşıma giren suç içeriklerinin suç korkusu yaratarak gündelik hayata nüfuz etme süreci tartışılmaktadır. Medya ve suç korkusu ilişkisi sağ gerçekçi yaklaşım çerçevesinden ele alınmaktadır. Suç ve şiddet içerikli haberlerin yarattığı etki, sembolik etkileşimci perspektifin ahlaki panik teorisiyle değerlendirilmektedir. İkinci aşama ise, söz konusu haberlerin analizidir. Suç ve şiddet içerikli haberlere nitel araştırma tekniği olan içerik analizi uygulanmıştır. Haberlerin seçiminde ise olasılıklı olmayan örneklem türlerinden biri olan amaçlı örneklem kullanılmıştır. Yapılan analiz sonucunda elde edilen bulgulara göre, medya haberlerinde yer alan suç ve şiddete dair bilginin gündelik hayata nüfuz ettiği, fail/mağdur profilini genelleştirerek dolaylı bir deneyime yol açtığı sonucuna ulaşıldığı söylenebilmektedir. Buradan hareketle mağduriyet olgusunun anlam ve kapsamının tartışılması ve yeniden değerlendirilmesi hedeflenmektedir.
