A Comprehensive Review of International Research on Tourist Guiding
Abstract
Purpose and Importance: By systematically examining publication patterns and scholarly contributions, the study aims to enhance understanding of how tour-guiding research has evolved and to support more informed, strategic future research in this field.
Methodology: The study employs a quantitative bibliometric analysis approach. Data were collected from the Web of Science database and analyzed using key bibliometric indicators, including publication output, citation performance, author productivity, collaboration networks, keyword co-occurrence, and journal distribution.
Findings: The analysis covers 456 articles published between 1985 and 2024. Findings show a notable rise in publications, especially after 2010. Key research themes include tourist satisfaction, performance, and service quality. China, the United States, and the United Kingdom are the most productive countries. Over time, research topics have diversified, with increasing focus on sustainability and niche tourism.
Originality/Value: This study offers a systematic and up-to-date mapping of the tour guiding research landscape, contributing to the literature by clarifying the field’s intellectual foundations and identifying underexplored topics. It provides a valuable reference point for scholars seeking to position their work within the existing body of knowledge.
Limitations: The analysis is limited to articles indexed in the Web of Science database and published in English, which may exclude relevant studies indexed elsewhere or written in other languages. Future research may benefit from incorporating multiple databases and comparative analyses to achieve a more comprehensive perspective.
Practical Implications: By identifying influential studies, key themes, and research gaps, the findings support researchers, journal editors, and policymakers in making more targeted and evidence-based decisions regarding research priorities and academic collaboration in the field of tour guiding.
