A Comparative Look at the Relationship Between Contemporary Dramaturgy and Cinema

Abstract

Dramaturgy, as an analysis and practice field, is a discipline that emerges and develops in the historical progression of the art of the theatre. Dramaturgy was named a separate discipline after Lessing wrote Hamburgische Dramaturgie (1769). Lessing's work is considered a threshold for modern dramaturgy. Dramaturgy developed and gained competence in the 19th and 20th centuries through the studies of German theatre theorists. By the end of the silent cinema era, and with dramaturgy beginning to be associated with cinema, word (dialogue) became the basis of the audio-visual cinematographic image; thus, the design, writing, and dramatic text began to determine the art of cinema. At this stage, cinema borrowed concepts and methods such as dramatic structure, dramaturgical practices, and text analysis from theatre and adapted them. However, due to the ontological differences between theatre and cinema, some problems arise in integrating terms, notions, methods, and practices into the cinema. This article focuses on dramaturgy as a competent and separate discipline and its relationship with theatre and cinema. It tries to understand the parallels and differences between theory and practice in cinema and theatre; based on the etymological analysis of the related concepts and a descriptive method based on historical literature and theoretical approaches. Thus, it aims to contribute to studies focusing on the notion and practices of dramaturgy so that dramaturgy gains a clear and distinct meaning in cinema as in theatre.

Çağdaş Dramaturji ve Sinema İlişkisine Karşılaştırmalı Bir Bakış

Abstract

Dramaturji, bir analiz ve uygulama alanı olarak tiyatro sanatının tarihsel yürüyüşü içinde ortaya çıkmış, gelişmiş bir disiplindir. Dramaturjinin ayrı bir disiplin olarak adının konması ve ayrışması Lessing’in Die Hamburgische Dramaturgie (1769) adlı çalışmasıyla mümkün olmuştur. 19 ve 20. yüzyılda, özellikle Alman tiyatro kuramcılarının çalışmalarıyla gelişen dramaturji, bu dönemde yetkinlik kazanmış ve bir disiplin olarak kabul görmeye başlamıştır. Dramaturjinin sinemayla birlikte anılmaya başlaması ise sessiz sinema döneminin kapanmasıyla mümkün olmuştur. Söz/diyalog, görsel-işitsel sinematografik imgenin temel bileşeni olmuş, böylece dramatik metin tasarımı, yazımı ve uygulaması sinema sanatını belirlemeye başlamıştır. Sinema bu aşamada, dramatik yapı, dramaturjik metin analizi ve uygulaması gibi kavram ve metotları tiyatrodan ödünç alarak kendi alanına uyarlama yoluna girmiştir. Ancak, tiyatro ve sinema sanatlarının ontolojik farklılıkları sebebiyle, tiyatrodaki dramaturji uygulamalarıyla ilgili terim, nosyon, metot ve uygulamaların sinemaya entegre edilmesi bakımından birtakım sorunlar ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu makale, dramaturjiyi yetkin, ayrı bir disiplin olarak ele alarak, tiyatro ve sinemayla ilişkisine odaklanmıştır. İlgili kavramların etimolojik analizinden kalkarak tarihsel literatüre ve kuramsal yaklaşımlara dayalı betimleyici bir yöntemle, sinema ve tiyatroda kuram ve uygulamadaki paralellikleri ve farklılıkları anlamaya çalışmıştır. Böylece, dramaturji nosyonunun ve uygulama alanlarının, tiyatroda olduğu gibi sinemada da daha açık ve belirgin bir anlama kavuşması yönündeki çalışmalara katkı sunmayı amaçlamıştır.
