Hijyenin Estetiği: Judy Chicago’nun Regl Dönemi Banyosu Eseri Bağlamında Sanatta İğrenmenin Temsili

Abstract

Sanatta iğrenme kavramı, estetik algının sınırlarını zorlayan ve izleyiciyi rahatsız ederek düşündürmeyi amaçlayan bir yaklaşım olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Bu doğrultuda bedensel sıvılar, atıklar ve diğer rahatsız edici nesneler sanatsal malzeme olarak kullanılmakta ve geleneksel güzellik anlayışını sorgulayan eserler üretilmektedir. Bu tür sanat pratikleri, izleyiciyi konfor alanından çıkararak, başta güzellik kavramı olmak üzere birçok toplumsal ve kültürel normu eleştiren bir alan yaratmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, hijyen kavramı, iğrenme estetiğinde sıkça kullanılan unsurlar arasında yer almaktadır. Bu makale, hijyen kavramının sanat aracılığıyla nasıl biyolojik bir gerçeklikten çıkarak toplumsal normları belirleyen bir yapıya dönüştüğünü araştırmaktadır. Ayrıca, sanatta hijyen ve iğrenme kavramlarının nasıl karşı karşıya geldiğini ve estetik bir unsur olarak nasıl işlev kazandığını tartışmaktadır. Çalışmada, bedensel atıklar aracılığıyla hijyen kavramını kültürel kodlar ve sanatsal üretimler bağlamında ele alınmaktadır. İğrenme uyandıran imgelerin, yalnızca bireysel bir tepki üretmekle kalmayıp aynı zamanda toplumsal tabulara ve estetik algıya yönelik bir meydan okuma işlevi gördüğü vurgulanmaktadır. Hijyenin sınırlarının nasıl belirlendiği, bedensel atıkların ne zaman kabul edilebilir ne zaman rahatsız edici hale geldiği ve sanatın bu sınırlara nasıl müdahale ettiği tartışılmaktadır. Bu çerçevede, Judy Chicago’nun Regl Dönemi Banyosu (1972) adlı eseri, hijyen algısının sınırlarını zorlayan çarpıcı bir örnek olarak ele alınmıştır. Bu eser bağlamında, görsel sanatların iğrenme ve hijyen kavramlarını nasıl sorguladığı, bu sorgulamanın izleyici üzerindeki etkileri, izleyiciyi bu sınırları yeniden düşünmeye nasıl teşvik ettiği ve estetik algının dönüşümünde nasıl bir rol oynadığı gibi sorular bu çalışmanın temel odak noktalarını oluşturmaktadır.

The Aesthetics of Hygiene: The Representation of Disgust in Art in the Context of Judy Chicago's Menstruation Bathroom

Abstract

The concept of disgust in art stands out as an approach that pushes the limits of aesthetic perception and aims to make the viewer think by disturbing them. In this direction, bodily fluids, waste and other disturbing objects are used as artistic materials and works that question the traditional understanding of beauty are produced. Such art practices take the viewer out of their comfort zone and create a space that criticizes many social and cultural norms, especially the concept of beauty. In this context, the concept of hygiene is among the elements frequently used in the aesthetics of disgust. This article explores how the concept of hygiene is transformed through art from a biological reality into a structure that determines social norms. It also discusses how the concepts of hygiene and disgust are confronted in art and how they function as an aesthetic element. The study examines the concept of hygiene through bodily waste in the context of cultural codes and artistic productions. It is emphasized that images that evoke disgust not only produce an individual reaction but also function as a challenge to social taboos and aesthetic perception. It is discussed how the boundaries of hygiene are determined, when bodily waste becomes acceptable and when it becomes disturbing, and how art intervenes in these boundaries. In this framework, Judy Chicago's Menstruation Bathroom (1972) is taken as a striking example that pushes the boundaries of hygiene perception. In the context of this work, questions such as how visual arts question the concepts of disgust and hygiene, the effects of this questioning on the viewer, how it encourages the viewer to rethink these boundaries and what role it plays in the transformation of aesthetic perception constitute the main focal points of this study.
