Symbolic and Semantic Structure in University Emblems in Turkiye: A Content Analysis on the Visual Construction of Corporate Identity

Abstract

Corporate identity is among the basic visual communication elements that convey the values of an institution, vision, and social standing to its target audience. Emblems, the most tangible representation of corporate identity, are strategic indicators in higher education institutions expressing the uniqueness and academic stance of the institution. The study aimed to examine the symbolic and semantic structures of university emblems in Turkiye with content analysis, in line with the principles of visual communication design. The study population consisted of a total of 206 universities (128 state and 78 private) listed in the Higher Education Council (HEC) database as of April 19, 2026. A complete enumeration method was used instead of sampling, and the semantic structures of the emblems were analyzed based on the perspectives of Place-Identity, Symbolic Interactionism, and Gestalt Theories. Emblems were categorized based on academic symbols, historical and cultural elements, nature representations, and abstract indicators, along with geometric form, color usage, and typographic preferences. The data obtained imply that the prominent visual elements in the emblems function as basic “meaning-generating elements” in the construction of institutional identity. In particular, academic symbols and local and cultural elements are predominantly used, and institutions build their legitimacy on historical heritage and spatial belonging. In the color analysis, shades of blue (49.51%) were dominant as a symbol of authority and trust. In conclusion, it was determined that university emblems are not only aesthetic design elements but also powerful visual communication tools that bridge local belonging with academic universality and produce multi-layered meanings.
