Tarihsel Eşikler ve Eğitim: Sosyal Yeniden Üretimin Değişen Biçimleri

Abstract

Bu makale, eğitim ile sosyal yeniden üretim arasındaki ilişkinin, "kritik eşikler" olarak kavramsallaştırılan tarihsel kırılma dönemlerinde nasıl dönüştüğünü incelemektedir. Eğitim genel olarak mevcut sınıf ve statü hiyerarşilerini yeniden üreten istikrarlı bir mekanizma olarak anlaşılsa da, bu çalışma söz konusu yeniden üretim işlevlerinin ne otomatik ne de tarihsel olarak değişmez olduğunu savunmaktadır. Tarihsel kurumsalcılıktan gelen içgörülerden yararlanan makale; devrimci rejim değişikliklerinden uzun süreli birikmiş gerilim dönemlerine kadar uzanan kritik eşiklerin; yerleşik bilgi, beceri ve eğitimsel meşruiyet rejimlerini geçici olarak sarsarak istikrarsızlaştırdığını ortaya koymaktadır. Osmanlı İmparatorluğu/Türkiye, Çin, Japonya (Tokugawa'dan Meiji dönemine), post-sosyalist Doğu Avrupa ve Güney Kore üzerine yapılan karşılaştırmalı bir analiz aracılığıyla bu çalışma, eğitimsel değişimi şekillendiren üç analitik boyut tanımlamaktadır: kırılmanın doğası, meşru bilgi ve beceri rejimlerindeki dönüşümler ve eğitim sistemlerinin kurumsal tepkileri. Bulgular, kritik eşiklerin eğitimin yeniden üretim kapasitesini zayıflatabilse de, nadiren kalıcı eşitlikçi sonuçlar doğurduğunu göstermektedir. Aksine, eğitim sistemleri sosyal yeniden üretimi; tarihsel avantajları yeni siyasi, ideolojik veya ekonomik çerçeveler altında yeniden meşrulaştırarak organize etme eğilimindedir. Makale, eğitimin ne tamamen muhafazakâr bir aygıt ne de doğası gereği özgürleştirici bir güç olarak anlaşılması gerektiği sonucuna varmaktadır; eğitim, sosyal eşitsizliklerin tarihsel dönüşüm anlarında askıya alındığı, yeniden kodlandığı ve yönlendirildiği ihtilaflı bir kurumsal alandır.

Historical Junctures and Education: Changing Modes of Social Reproduction

Abstract

This article examines how the relationship between education and social reproduction is transformed during periods of historical rupture, conceptualized as critical junctures. While education is commonly understood as a stable mechanism reproducing existing class and status hierarchies, this study argues that such reproductive functions are neither automatic nor historically invariant. Drawing on insights from historical institutionalism, the article demonstrates that critical junctures—ranging from revolutionary regime changes to prolonged periods of accumulated tension—temporarily destabilize established regimes of knowledge, skill, and educational legitimacy. Through a comparative analysis of the Ottoman Empire/Turkey, China, Japan (from the Tokugawa to the Meiji period), post-socialist Eastern Europe, and South Korea, the study identifies three analytical dimensions shaping educational change: the nature of the rupture, transformations in regimes of legitimate knowledge and skills, and the institutional responses of education systems. The findings suggest that while critical junctures may weaken the reproductive capacity of education, they rarely generate durable egalitarian outcomes. Instead, education systems tend to reorganize social reproduction by re-legitimizing historical advantages under new political, ideological, or economic frameworks. The article concludes that education should be understood not as a purely conservative apparatus nor as an inherently emancipatory force, but as a contested institutional field in which social inequalities are suspended, recoded, and redirected during moments of historical transformation.
