Historical Junctures and Education: Changing Modes of Social Reproduction

This article examines how the relationship between education and social reproduction is transformed during periods of historical rupture, conceptualized as critical junctures. While education is commonly understood as a stable mechanism reproducing existing class and status hierarchies, this study argues that such reproductive functions are neither automatic nor historically invariant. Drawing on insights from historical institutionalism, the article demonstrates that critical junctures—ranging from revolutionary regime changes to prolonged periods of accumulated tension—temporarily destabilize established regimes of knowledge, skill, and educational legitimacy. Through a comparative analysis of the Ottoman Empire/Turkey, China, Japan (from the Tokugawa to the Meiji period), post-socialist Eastern Europe, and South Korea, the study identifies three analytical dimensions shaping educational change: the nature of the rupture, transformations in regimes of legitimate knowledge and skills, and the institutional responses of education systems. The findings suggest that while critical junctures may weaken the reproductive capacity of education, they rarely generate durable egalitarian outcomes. Instead, education systems tend to reorganize social reproduction by re-legitimizing historical advantages under new political, ideological, or economic frameworks. The article concludes that education should be understood not as a purely conservative apparatus nor as an inherently emancipatory force, but as a contested institutional field in which social inequalities are suspended, recoded, and redirected during moments of historical transformation.
