Augustinus Felsefesinde “Ara Varlık” Olarak İşaret (Signum) ve Dilsel İşaret

Abstract

Augustinus, işaretlere (sign) ilişkin tartışmalarda ve semiyotiğin tarihsel gelişiminde önemli bir yere sahiptir. Onun sahip olduğu önem, konuya pek çok eserinde değinmesinin yanı sıra işaretlere dair teorik düşünceyi kökten bir şekilde dönüştürmesi ve konuya dair terminolojiyi belirlemesinden kaynaklanır. Augustinus, Antik Yunan’ın ampirik çıkarıma dayalı işaret anlayışından farklı olarak, kelimeleri ve dili de kapsayacak daha genel bir işaret (signum) fikrine ulaşır. Hem Platoncu hem de Hristiyan bir zihnin ürünü olan bu yeni işaret düşüncesi, bir yandan Stoa mantığından bir yandan da Platoncu metafiziğin ruh-beden, akledilir dünya-duyulur dünya gibi temel bazı ikiliklerinden yararlanır. Böylece işaret, ontolojik hiyerarşide daha önce hiç sahip olmadığı bir konum elde eder: İki dünya arasında “ara bir varlık olarak işaret”. Ara varlık olarak işaretler ve özellikle de dilsel işaretler, Augustinus’un “içsel” olan olarak düşündüğü ruhla “dışsal” olan olarak düşündüğü beden arasında geçişkenliği sağlarken, içsel benliğin ya da ruhun ifşasını mümkün kılar. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Augustinus’un bu yeni işaret düşüncesinden hareketle, işaretlerin ve özellikle de dilsel işaretin ontolojik konumuna ilişkin bir inceleme yürütmektir. Augustinus’un konuyla ilgili teorik tartışmasının, işaretlerle iletişim kuran ve sonsuzca işaret üretebilme gücüne sahip bir varlık olarak insanın bu temel kabiliyetine daha yakından bakmamıza imkân sağlayacağını düşünüyoruz.

The Sign as “Intermediate Being” in Augustinian Philosophy and The Linguistic Sign

Abstract

Augustine has an important place in the debates on signs and in the historical development of semiotics. His importance stems not only from the fact that he touches upon the subject in many of his works, but also from the fact that he radically transformed the theoretical thought on signs and defined the terminology of the issue. In contrast to the Ancient Greek understanding of signs based on empirical inference, Augustine arrives at a more general idea of sign (signum) that encompasses words and language. This new idea of sign, which is the product of both a Platonic and a Christian mind, draws on Stoic logic on the one hand and some of the basic dualisms of Platonic metaphysics such as soul-body, intelligible world-sensible world on the other. Thus, the sign acquires a position in the ontological hierarchy that it never had before: “the sign as an intermediate being” between two worlds. Signs as intermediate beings, and linguistic signs in particular, make possible the disclosure of the inner self or soul, while providing the transitivity between the soul, which Augustine thinks of as the “inner”, and the body, which he thinks of as the “outer”. The aim of this study is to analyze the ontological position of signs, especially the linguistic sign, in light of Augustine’s new idea of the sign. We believe that Augustine’s theoretical discussion on the subject will allow us to take a closer look at this fundamental capability of the human as a being who communicates with signs and has the power to produce signs infinitely.
