Methodological Naturalism, Ontological Naturalism and the Limits of Sociology

Abstract

The founding fathers of sociology, namely Karl Marx, Émile Durkheim and Max Weber, were profoundly interested in religion, and integrated religion into their grand theories. Since then religion, particularly the social functions carried out by religion, the way religion evolves over time, and religion’s relationship with politics have been important topics of research for sociologists. While investigating religions’ social aspects, some sociologists embrace ontological naturalism, claiming that a belief in the supernatural roots of religion would curb the scope of sociological analysis. This article aims to dwell on the work of a prominent Turkish sociologist, namely Baykan Sezer, to illustrate how sociologists could fail to distinguish between methodological and ontological naturalism. Despite being critical of mainstream Turkish sociologists’ analyses on religion, and lacking any secularist agenda, Baykan Sezer confused methodological naturalism with ontological naturalism. Yet, as will be illustrated in this article, any discussions regarding the existence of God would be beyond sociology’s limits and sociological analysis does not necessitate ontological naturalism.

Metodolojik Natüralizm, Ontolojik Natüralizm ve Sosyolojinin Sınırları

Abstract

Karl Marx, Émile Durkheim ve Max Weber gibi sosyolojinin kurucu babaları dinle yakından ilgilenmişler, dini, teorilerine entegre etmişlerdir. O zamandan beri dinler, özellikle dinlerin toplumsal işlevleri, dinlerin zaman içinde nasıl evrim geçirdiği ve dinlerin siyasetle ilişkisi sosyolojinin önemli konu başlıklarından olmuştur. Dinlerin toplumsal yönlerini inceleyen bazı sosyologlar ise, dinlerin doğaüstü kökenlerine ilişkin bir inancın sosyolojik analizin açıklama gücünü azaltacağı iddiasıyla, ontolojik natüralizmi benimsemişlerdir. Bu makale Türkiye’nin önemli sosyologlarından Baykan Sezer’in çalışmalarına odaklanarak bazı sosyologların metodolojik natüralizm ile ontolojik natüralizm arasındaki farkı gözden kaçırdıklarını ortaya koymayı hedeflemektedir. Sezer, ana akım Türk sosyologlarının dinle ilgili analizlerine eleştirel yaklaşan bir isim olmasına ve herhangi bir sekülerist ajandaya sahip olmamasına rağmen metodolojik natüralizm ile ontolojik natüralizmi birbirine karıştırmıştır. Bu makalede Tanrı’nın varlığıyla ilgili tartışmaların sosyoloji disiplinin sınırlarını aştığı ve sosyolojik analizin ontolojik natüralizmi gerekli kılmadığı gösterilecektir.
