Drivers of Economic Problems-Induced Suicide Cases in Türkiye

Abstract

Suicide rates have fallen globally in recent years, but they have risen in Türkiye. Suicide cases can occur due to many reasons, including social, economic, political, and cultural factors. In this study, we aim to explore the drivers of economically induced suicide rates in Türkiye. For this purpose, this study employs the system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) using data based on the first-level Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS-1) classification, obtained from the Turkish Statistical Institute, covering the period 2006–2023. Our main findings show that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between income and the number of suicides; in other words, the suicidal Kuznets curve hypothesis is supported. For various income inequality indicators such as the Gini coefficient and the P80/P20 ratio, we find that income inequality is positively associated with suicide cases. It is also revealed that rising unemployment rates and household indebtedness are positively associated with the number of suicides. Finally, we find that the global economic crisis has a statistically significant and positive impact on the number of suicides. In this regard, policymakers should develop effective strategies to mitigate suicide rates attributable to economic hardship in Türkiye. These strategies may include maintaining income levels above a certain threshold, ensuring equitable income distribution, reducing unemployment and household indebtedness, and providing financial support to individuals during periods of crisis.
