The Impact of Food Production, Environmental Quality, and Selected Macroeconomic Indicators on Life Expectancy at Birth: A Panel Data Analysis for the N-11 Countries

Abstract

Life expectancy at birth, one of the indicators of a country’s well-being, is associated with access to healthcare, lifestyle habits, environmental factors, socioeconomic status, and quality of life. Therefore, the primary objective of this study is to investigate the impact of food production, environmental quality, and selected macroeconomic indicators on life expectancy at birth in the N-11 countries. The study employs panel data analysis using a dataset from the World Bank website covering the 1996-2022 period. According to the results of the study’s Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimator, it was found that the effect of changes in the unemployment rate on life expectancy is negative and statistically significant at the 10% significance level. On the other hand, it was determined that the effects of the variables food production, inflation, CO2 emissions, employment, and economic growth on life expectancy were not statistically significant. According to the findings of the Dumitrescu and Hurlin (2012) causality test, a bidirectional causal relationship was identified between life expectancy at birth and economic growth and carbon emissions. A one-way causal relationship was observed between life expectancy at birth and employment, as well as between inflation and life expectancy at birth. Finally, no causal relationship was found between life expectancy at birth and unemployment or food production.
