Abstract

“Etnografide Yeni Karşılaşmalar: Yazının Sınırlarında Bir Gezinti” başlıklı özel dosyanın bu giriş yazısı, Ankara Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü Halkbilimi Anabilim Dalının yüksek lisans ve doktora programlarında Serpil Aygün Cengiz’in verdiği “Araştırma Yöntemleri” dersi kapsamında gelişen kolektif bir düşünme sürecinin ve bu sürecin ürünü olan dört makale ile bir söyleşi metninin teorik zeminini çiziyor. Araştırmacı, verdiği derslerin içeriğini de anlattığı metninde derslerini hem akademik bilgi aktarımı hem de kırılganlık, çokseslilik, etik ilişki ve duygulanımla örülü düşünümsel bir karşılaşma olarak nasıl konumlandırdığını anlatıyor. Derste George E. Marcus ile Michael M. J. Fischer’in hazırladığı Kültürel Eleştiri Olarak Antropoloji -İnsan Bilimlerinde Deneysel Bir An (1986) ile James Clifford ve George E. Marcus’un editörlüğünü yaptığı Writing Culture: The Poetics and Politics of Ethnography (1986), Ruth Behar’ın The Vulnerable Observer: Anthropology That Breaks Your Heart (1996), Vincent Crapanzano’nun Tuhami: Portrait of a Moroccan (1980), Renato Rosaldo’nun The Day of Shelly’s Death: The Poetry and Ethnography of Grief (2014), Marjorie Shostak’ın Nisa: The Life and Words of a !Kung Woman (1981) ve Sophie Tamas’ın Life After Leaving: The Remains of Spousal Abuse (2011) gibi metinler üzerinden postmodern (yeni) etnografiye dair tartışmalar yürütülmüş; ayrıca sergiler, belgeseller ve öğrenci performansları aracılığıyla sanatla etnografiyi iç içe geçiren yaratıcı okumalar yapılmaya çalışılmıştır. Özel dosyadaki bu giriş yazısı aynı zamanda akademide yalnızlığa, otoriteye ve duyguların bastırılmasına karşı kolektif, estetik ve etik bir direniş metni olarak hazırlanmıştır.

New Encounters in Ethnography: A Stroll Along the Edges of Writing

Abstract

This introductory essay to the special issue titled "New Encounters in Ethnography: A Journey on the Borders of Writing" outlines the theoretical framework of a collective process of thinking that developed within the scope of the “Research Methods” course taught by Serpil Aygün Cengiz in the MA and PhD programs of the Department of Folklore at Ankara University’s Institute of Social Sciences. In this text, where the researcher also describes the content of her course, she explains how she positions her classes not only as spaces for academic knowledge transmission but also as reflexive encounters shaped by vulnerability, polyphony, ethical relations, and affect. The course engaged with significant debates on postmodern (new) ethnography through works such as Anthropology as Cultural Critique: An Experimental Moment in the Human Sciences (1986) by George E. Marcus and Michael M. J. Fischer, Writing Culture: The Poetics and Politics of Ethnography (1986) edited by James Clifford and George E. Marcus, The Vulnerable Observer: Anthropology That Breaks Your Heart (1996) by Ruth Behar, Tuhami: Portrait of a Moroccan (1980) by Vincent Crapanzano, The Day of Shelly’s Death: The Poetry and Ethnography of Grief (2014) by Renato Rosaldo, Nisa: The Life and Words of a !Kung Woman (1981) by Marjorie Shostak, and Life After Leaving: The Remains of Spousal Abuse (2011) by Sophie Tamas. Alongside these texts, the course also incorporated creative engagements that brought art and ethnography into dialogue through exhibitions, documentaries, and student performances. This introduction is also written as a collective, aesthetic, and ethical act of resistance—against loneliness, authority, and the suppression of emotions in academia.
