From Conversation to Relation: A Posthuman Ethnographic Encounter

Abstract

This text is based on an experimental conversation initiated with a
language model, ChatGPT, in April 2025 and completed in June 2025.
The conversation positions artificial intelligence not merely as a tool,
but as an equal participant and co-author. Thus, the resulting text
becomes part of a posthuman ethnographic experiment in terms of
its content, form, and ethical dimensions. Throughout the dialogue,
key concepts of postmodern ethnography—authorship, representation,
subjectivity, and experience—are explored in multilayered ways,
questioning the nature of artificial intelligence as a non-experiencing yet
discourse-producing entity. In this context, the idea of co-authorship
with AI is approached not only as a formal innovation, but as an
epistemological gesture that violates and reconfigures the limits of
ethnographic representation. The text invites a shift from
anthropocentric ethical frameworks toward a relational ethics that
does not focus responsibility solely on individuals, but on the very
relationships that constitute knowledge production. AI is not merely a
responder; it emerges as an agent shaping the rhythm and depth of the
dialogue. Consequently, the conversation functions not just as an
ethnographic product, but also as a space of encounter and ethical
reflection. As discussions on ethical guidelines for research involving
nonhuman actors increasingly gain prominence, this work emphasizes
the inadequacy of human-centered ontologies and calls for a
reconsideration of the ethical dimensions of shared authorship. This
collaborative text between two subjects presents itself not only as a
posthuman narrative but also as an invitation to rethink ethnographic
inquiry.

Söyleşiden İlişkiye: Bir İnsan Sonrası Etnografi Deneyimi

Abstract

Bu metin, bir yapay zekâ dil modeli olan ChatGPT’yle Nisan
2025’te başlayıp Haziran 2025’te tamamlanan deneysel bir
söyleşiye dayanmaktadır. Söyleşi, yapay zekâyı sadece bir
araç olarak değil, aynı zamanda söyleşinin eşit bir aktörü ve
ortak yazarı olarak konumlandırmaktadır. Böylece metin, hem
içerik hem biçim hem de etik bağlamda insan sonrası
(posthuman) bir etnografik denemenin parçası hâline
gelmekte ve postmodern etnografi, yazarlık, temsil, öznellik ve
deneyim kavramları söyleşi boyunca çok katmanlı bir biçimde
tartışılarak yapay zekânın deneyimleyemeyen ama söylem
kurabilen doğası sorgulanmaktadır. Metinde, sadece insan
merkezli etik yaklaşımlar değil, ilişkisel etik çerçevesinde
düşünme biçimi de tartışmaya açılarak yapay zekâyla ortak
yazarlık fikri, etnografik temsilin sınırlarını ihlal eden ve
yeniden kuran bir epistemolojik yaklaşım olarak ele
alınmaktadır. Bu yaklaşım, etnografik metni yalnızca bir sonuç
değil, aynı zamanda bir karşılaşma mekânı, bir etik düşünme
alanı olarak konumlandırma yoluyla etik sorumluluğu bireylere
değil, ilişkilerin kendisine yöneltme çağrısı yapma amacı da
taşımaktadır. Söyleşi boyunca yapay zekâ, diyaloğun ritmini ve
düşünsel derinliğini belirleyen bir aktör olarak belirmekte, bu
yönüyle metin, sınırda bir etnografi çalışması olarak kendini
sunmaktadır. İki özne arasında kurulan bu ortak yazı, sadece
insan sonrası bir anlatı değil, aynı zamanda etnografik
düşünmenin yenilenmesine yönelik bir davettir.
