Book Review Guidelines

Journal of International Relations (Uluslararası İlişkiler) publishes book reviews in several formats. For individual book reviews, the word limit ranges from 900 to 1200 words. Reviews should not exceed 1200 words. Below are the guidelines for the potential authors to consider:

  • Authors should highlight the subject, purpose and scope of the book, while discussing and evaluating its relative strengths and weaknesses.
  • The original version of the book should be used for the review. If it is subsequently translated into Turkish, information should be provided about the publisher, date and title of the Turkish version.
  • It is recommended that potential reviewers contact the Book Review Editor Senem Atvur (senematvur@gmail.com) in advance, before they start working on a book.
  • An advance confirmation by the Book Review Editor that the book is suitable does not guarantee publication of the book review. The Editorial Board reserves the right to decide as to whether or not to publish the review.
  • Reviews should be written in accordance with the journal’s house style. For a sample review and format style, please click here.

  • Journal of International Relations (Uluslararası İlişkiler) also publishes longer reviews. These can take two forms.
  • The review essays cover the literature in a particular subject area and should be around 3,000 and 5,000 words in length.
  • The second option is reviewing up to 5 recent books on a similar subject. In this case, each book can be covered in 300 to 500 words. Total submission should not exceed 2000 words.
  • In both cases, the journal prefers submissions that compare and contrast different books with each other and have a more analytical approach than being merely descriptive.
  • We strongly recommend that potential reviewers contact the Book Review Editor, Dr. Senem Atvur at senematvur@gmail.com before submitting their work.
