Mehmet Aktan lisans eğitimini Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Mühendislik Fakültesi Endüstri Mühendisliği Bölümü’nde 1995 yılında tamamlamıştır. Yüksek lisans ve doktora derecelerini endüstri mühendisliği alanında sırasıyla 1997 yılında Iowa Üniversitesi, 2003 yılında Wisconsin-Madison Üniversitesi’nden almıştır. 2004 yılında NSF projesi kapsamında Penn State Üniversitesi’nde doktora sonrası araştırma yapmıştır.

2003-2013 yılları arasında Atatürk Üniversitesi Mühendislik Fakültesi Endüstri Mühendisliği Bölümü’nde öğretim üyesi olarak çalışmış ve Bölüm Başkanlığı, Anabilim Dalı Başkanlığı, Dekan Yardımcılığı gibi idari görevlerde bulunmuştur. 2013-2024 yılları arasında Necmettin Erbakan Üniversitesi Mühendislik Fakültesi’nde Endüstri Mühendisliği Bölüm Başkanı olarak görev almıştır.

Profesör Aktan’ın araştırmaları verimlilik, kalite iyileştirme, istatistiki yöntemler, finans mühendisliği alanlarındadır. Yurt içi ve yurt dışında yayınlanmış çok sayıda kitap ve makale çalışmaları bulunmaktadır. KOBİ’lerin verimlilik ve rekabetçiliklerini artırma faaliyetleri kapsamında Konya Model Fabrika’da akademik uzman olarak, Innopark KOBİMentör BİGG+ programında mentör olarak çalışmıştır.
