A Precious Example Of Crusade Preaching: Humbert De Romans' De Predicatione Crucis

Abstract

What do you think is the most important stage of the Crusades, which must be meticulously prepared to avoid failure? Is it the excellence of the military equipment, the choice of the best route or the coming together of thousands of people for the same purpose? Although they all seem to be related, convincing the masses to participate in a voyage that was likely to end in death had to be the most difficult. This was an easy peasy as long as the architects of the Crusade were clergymen who knew how to catch people at their most vulnerable points. However, no matter how effective the religious motivation, past failures, people losing limbs or never returning, or the loss of gains in a short period of time could strike fear into the hearts of Christians and deter them from accepting the cross. For this reason, the preaching of the Crusades has become a profession that must be carried out under the control of competent people. Humbert de Romans, a 13th-century Dominican master, decided to write a work to facilitate the work of his colleagues who were to preach the Crusade at a time when going on a Crusade was not as attractive as it had been. He finished his work De predicatione crucis in the 1260s and made it available to preachers. In his work, Humbert prioritised the awareness-raising of those who were qualified to preach, and listed one by one the ways in which preachers should act according to the nature and purpose of the people gathered and the course of events. In this study, the life of Humbert de Romans will be analysed and the preaching techniques in De predicatione crucis will be discussed.

Haçlı Seferi Vaazının Nadide Örneklerinden Biri: Humbert De Romans’ın De Predıcatıone Crucıs Adlı Eseri

Abstract

Başarısızlıkla sonuçlanmaması için titizlikle hazırlanılması gereken Haçlı Seferlerinin en önemli safhası nedir dersiniz? Askerî teçhizatın muntazam olması mı, en uygun güzergâhın seçilmesi mi yoksa binlerce insanı aynı amaç uğruna bir araya getirmek mi? Hepsi birbiriyle bağlantılı gibi görünse de ölümle sonuçlanması muhtemel bir sefere iştirak edecek kitleleri ikna etmek en zoru olmalıydı. Haçlı Seferinin mimarları, insanları en hassas noktasından yakalamayı bilen ruhbanlar olduğu müddetçe bu kolay bir işti. Lakin dinî motivasyon ne kadar etkili olsa da geçmişteki başarısızlıklar, uzuvlarını kaybetmiş ya da hiç geri dönememiş insanlar veya elde dilen kazançların kısa sürede yitirilmesi, Hristiyanların yüreğine korku salmaya ve haç kuşanmaya engel teşkil edebiliyordu. Bu sebeple Haçlı vaazı verme işi ehil insanların kontrolünde yapılması gereken bir meslek hâline geldi. XIII. yüzyılda yaşamış Dominikan üstadı azamı Humbert de Romans, Haçlı Seferine çıkmanın eskisi kadar cazip gelmediği bir dönemde Haçlı vaazı verecek meslektaşlarının işini kolaylaştırmak için bir eser yazmaya karar verdi. De predicatione crucis adını verdiği eserini 1260’lı yıllarda bitirdi ve vaizlerin hizmetine sundu. Çalışmasında, vaaz vermeye yetkin kişileri bilinçlendirmeyi ön planda tutan Humbert, toplanan halkın niteliğine, amacına ve olayların gidişatına göre vaizlerin nasıl hareket edeceklerini tek tek sıraladı. Bu çalışmada Humbert de Romans’ın hayatı incelenecek ve De predicatione crucis adlı eserde yer alan vaaz teknikleri üzerinde durulacaktır.
