The Seljuks, who were founded in Khorasan towards the middle of the 11th century and started to expand their borders rapidly, were the third Turkish-Islamic state established in that geography after the Qarakhanids and Ghaznavids. The Seljuks expanded their borders from the Chinese border to the Mediterranean, protected the Islamic world against the Batinids, Crusaders, Mongols and Karahitays in military, political, religious and intellectual aspects, and became the most powerful state of the period and assumed the leadership of the Islamic world.
The Seljuks made Anatolia a Turkish homeland by following an official conquest policy against the West. In this way, they prepared the ground for the establishment of other Turkish States, especially the Seljuks of Turkey and the Ottomans, which were to be established in Anatolia, and became a source for them in terms of organisation and civilisation.
The Seljuks ushered a new era in Turkish-Islamic History with the organisation and civilisation they built in Khorasan and Anatolia and pioneered the Turkish States that came after them by making significant contributions to this period. Today, there are 27 states within the borders of the Seljuks, whose territorial extent is over 10 million km2, and the Seljuk remnants have survived to the present day ethnically, culturally and religiously.
Although it covers an important period of Turkish History, it cannot be said that sufficient studies on Seljuk History have been carried out in the world and in Turkey. For this reason, Seljuk History and Civilisation should be revealed in detail with all its aspects. In addition, the socio-economic and cultural relations of the Seljuk Turks and Oghuz tribes with other states and nations, the civilisational and historical position of Europe in the same period, and the commercial and religious-cultural relations between East and West are among the important research topics that affect the following historical periods. Therefore, history, anthropology, art, politics, culture, geography and religion in the Middle Ages are the main research topics of the journal.
Selçuk University Journal of Seljuk Studies, which includes studies on Seljuk history, culture, art and civilisation, dates back to the establishment of the Seljuk Researches Centre. In 1986, the journal, which started to be published under the name Selçuk Dergisi (Journal of Seljuk), could only publish 4 issues, one issue per year.
The Journal of Seljuk started its publication life again after a long break and this journal, which has continued its way under the name of Selçuk University Journal of Seljuk Studies since the 5th issue, continues its way with the understanding of Altai to Seljuk, from Seljuk to the Present. The Journal of Seljuk Studies is published in two issues per year, spring and autumn, both in printed and electronic media. This journal, which mainly includes studies on Seljuk History and Civilisation, also accepts original articles related to other fields of history.
