Aftermath of death of Anatolian Seljuk Sultan, Kilic Arslan I, the minor son of Sultan, Tugrul
Arslan, was acclaimed to be sultan in Malatia. Although there are evident records regarding his reign
and activities of Tugrul Arslan in the relevant resources, his name was not mentioned among the
sultans of Seljuks. It is reported that the Seljuk reign remained vacant until the reign of Shahinshah.
Tugrul Arslan referred as Sultan in resources, ruled the empire under guardianship of his atabegs
and mother Aisha Khatun in Malatia until 1124. It was observed that Tugrul Arslan exhibited weak administration as he was failed to escape his mother’s influence. Nevertheless, although political
influence of Seljuk State eroded after death of Kilic Arslan, Tugrul Arslan succeeded to rule a
significant city of Malatia where strong competition took place under Seljuk flag for long period time.
Besides, interregnum period occurred afterwards of Kilic Arslan’s death was somehow prevented after
Tugrul Arslan was acclaimed as sultan. Whether Tugrul Arslan was one of the Seljuk sultans is an
essential issue which has not attached importance until today. In the present study, reign of Tugrul
Arslan as Seljuk Sultan in Malatia will be investigated in the light of resources from the period of
1107 and 1124.
