Language Usages of Turks in Belgium

Abstract

Attitudes of using the language of the host society and the mothertongue shape the communicaion processes. This paper mainly aims to examine Belgian Turks’ using of mothertongue and the language of the host society. The study was designed as mixed research involving both qualitative and quantitative methods. The sample of the study included 424 participants for survey and 55 participants for interviews. According to the findings participants stated that they know the language of the host society but they generally speak their mothertongue in their houses, in the group of friends, in the school or work. This is a result of living together with other Turks in Turkish neigbourhoods and limited relations.

Belçika’daki Türklerin Dil Kullanımları

Abstract

Anadilin ve ev sahibi ülke dilinin kullanımına ilişkin tutumlar göç edilen ülkede geliştirilen iletişim süreçlerini biçimlendirmektedir. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı Belçika’da yaşayan Türklerin anadillerini ve ev sahibi toplumun dilini bilme düzeyini ve kullanma biçimlerini irdelemektir. Araştırmanın örneklemini Belçika’nın Flaman Bölgesi’nde yaşayan ve anket uygulamasına katılan 424 kişi ile yüz yüze görüşme yapılan 55 kişi oluşturmuştur. Veriler anket, görüşme ve gözlemler aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Sonuçlara göre katılımcılar ev sahibi ülkenin dilini bildiklerini ifade etmelerine karşın evde, ailede, arkadaş çevresinde ve iş/okulda genellikle Türkçeyi kullanmaktadırlar. Bu durum daha çok Türklerle bir arada yaşamanın ve ev sahibi toplumla sınırlı bir etkileşimin varlığının sonucu olarak ortaya çıkmaktadır.
