YOUTH AND MORAL DISENGAGEMENT: AN ASSESSMENT ON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS' LEVELS OF MORAL DISENGAGEMENT

Abstract

Moral disengagement is one of the methods that individuals who exhibit immoral behaviours and therefore experience some negative emotions such as guilt and shame resort to get rid of such negative emotions through various mechanisms. In this study, moral disengagement levels of high school students were examined according to some variables. The study was conducted with 376 students in total, 226 girls and 150 boys, in the city center of Çorum and students participated in the research voluntarily. In addition to personal information questionnaire, "Moral Disengagement Scale", which was developed by Bandura et al. (1996) and adapted to Turkish by Yavuz-Birben and Bacanlı (2017), was used in the study. The data were analysed through IBM SPSS Statistics (v22) package program. Independent sample t-test, variance analysis and Post Hoc (LSD) tests were used in the analysis. Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of the Moral Disengagement Scale (MDS) was calculated as .86 for this research. As a result of the study, it was found that the mean of the general score obtained from the moral disengagement scale was above the average (X̄ = 1.73). It was determined that the mean scores of moral disengagement of the sample group differed significantly according to the variables of gender, the family's response to a behaviour that is not approved by the society, the frequency of moral rules being emphasized in the family, and according to the way decisions are made about the person himself in the family. There was no significant difference in the mean scores of moral disengagement according to the variables of class level, mother and father educational status.

GENÇLİK VE AHLAKİ KAYITSIZLIK: LİSE ÖĞRENCİLERİNİN AHLAKİ KAYITSIZLIK DÜZEYLERİ ÜZERİNE BİR DEĞERLENDİRME

Abstract

Ahlaki kayıtsızlık, ahlak dışı davranışlar sergileyen ve bu nedenle de suçluluk ve utanç gibi bir takım olumsuz duygular yaşayan bireylerin çeşitli mekanizmalar yoluyla bu tür olumsuz duygulardan kurtulmak için başvurdukları yöntemlerden birisidir. Bu araştırmada, lise öğrencilerinin ahlaki kayıtsızlık düzeyleri bazı değişkenlere göre incelenmiştir. Araştırma, Çorum il merkezinde 226'sı kız, 150'si erkek olmak üzere toplam 376 öğrenci ile yürütülmüştür ve öğrenciler araştırmaya gönüllü olarak katılmıştır. Çalışmada kişisel bilgi anketi ile Bandura ve arkadaşları (1996) tarafından geliştirilen ve Yavuz-Birben ve Bacanlı (2017) tarafından Türkçe’ye uyarlaması yapılmış olan “Ahlaki Kayıtsızlık Ölçeği” (Moral Disengagement Scale) kullanılmıştır. Veriler IBM SPSS Statistics (v22) paket programı ile analiz edilmiştir. Verilerin analizinde bağımsız örneklem t-testi, varyans analizi ve Post Hoc (LSD) testleri kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada, Ahlaki Kayıtsızlık Ölçeğinin (AKÖ) Cronbach Alpha güvenirlik katsayısı .86 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, ahlaki kayıtsızlık ölçeğinden alınan genel puan ortalamasının ortanın üzerinde olduğu görülmüştür (X̄=1.73). Cinsiyet, toplumun onaylamadığı bir davranışa ailenin tepkisi, ahlaki kuralların aile içinde vurgulanma sıklığı ve kendisi hakkında kararların ailede alınma şekli değişkenlerine göre örneklem grubunun ahlaki kayıtsızlık puan ortalamalarının anlamlı bir şekilde farklılaştığı tespit edilmiştir. Sınıf düzeyi, anne ve baba eğitim durumu değişkenlerine göre ise, ahlaki kayıtsızlık puan ortalamalarında anlamlı bir farklılaşma bulunmamıştır.
