Founded in the early 20th century to serve Turkishness in the Ottoman Empire, the Turk Ocagi is one of the organizations that have been influential in the construction of the new Turkish state with its ideology and activities. Turk Ocagi, which took an active role in the years of national struggle, later served the establishment of the Republic in Ankara, where it moved. Besides its acitivities in the capital, Turk Ocagi has contributed greatly to the revival of national identity and to adoptment of it in Turkey. Turk Ocagi has taken a central role in the cultural and political transformation in Republican era of Turkey. Representing Turkish nationalism, Turk Ocagi’s move to Ankara has a symbolic importance in terms of the way the Republic will take shape. Supporting the new regime on basic issues, members of the Turk Ocagi are among the actors of the state's building on nationalist foundations. While the Republic is creating its own institutional structure, it is the duty of the Turk Ocagi to facilitate the development and reach of the public of this new order. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his entourage showed a close interest in the Turk Ocagi, which was commissioned to explain the reforms to the public. But the unity of ideal and purpose did not prevent the Turk Ocagi to be closed shortly afterwards. This article discusses the differentiated ideological stances and the reasons for their differentiation after the association of the modernist nationalism of the Republic and the traditional nationalism of the Turk Ocagi in the establishment of the state.
