An Investigation into Athletes’ Perceived Mental Fatigue Awareness

Abstract

Aim: The purpose of this study was to examine perceived mental fatigue awareness among athletes. Method: For this purpose, the results of the Perceived Mental Fatigue Awareness Scale for Athletes completed by 278 actively training student-athletes enrolled in the Faculty of Sport Sciences at Ondokuz Mayıs University were evaluated. In the statistical analyses, independent samples t-tests were used for pairwise comparisons, one-way ANOVA was applied for multiple comparisons, and LSD post-hoc tests were employed to determine the source of the differences. Results: The results showed that perceived mental fatigue awareness scores did not differ significantly by gender or age (p>0.05). However, significant differences were found according to type of sport and years of sports experience (p<0.001). Athletes participating in team sports reported higher levels of perceived mental fatigue awareness than those in individual sports, while athletes with longer sports experience tended to report lower fatigue levels. Descriptive findings indicated generally low levels of perceived physical and cognitive fatigue, with a consistent overall mean score of 2.17 across scale items. Overall, sport-related factors appeared to play a more influential role in perceived mental fatigue awareness than demographic variables. Conclusion: The findings suggest that sports education may enhance athletes’ awareness of physical and cognitive fatigue through training- and recovery-related curriculum content. Differences by sport type and experience indicate the importance of contextual and experiential factors. Accordingly, this study contributes to the literature by emphasizing the role of education in fatigue awareness, while future research should include larger samples and additional psychological and environmental variables.

Sporcuların Algılanan Zihinsel Yorgunluk Farkındalıklarının İncelenmesi

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, sporcularda algılanan zihinsel yorgunluk farkındalığını incelemektir. Yöntem: Bu amaç doğrultusunda, Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Spor Bilimleri Fakültesinde öğrenim gören ve aktif olarak antrenman yapan 278 öğrenci-sporcu tarafından doldurulan Sporcular için Algılanan Zihinsel Yorgunluk Farkındalığı Ölçeğinden elde edilen veriler değerlendirilmiştir. İstatistiksel analizlerde ikili karşılaştırmalar için bağımsız örneklemler t-testi, çoklu karşılaştırmalar için tek yönlü ANOVA uygulanmış; farklılıkların kaynağını belirlemek üzere LSD post-hoc testlerinden yararlanılmıştır. Bulgular: Elde edilen sonuçlara göre, algılanan zihinsel yorgunluk farkındalığı puanları cinsiyet ve yaş değişkenlerine göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı biçimde farklılaşmamıştır (p>0,05). Buna karşılık, spor türü ve spor deneyimi yılına göre anlamlı farklılıklar saptanmıştır (p<0,001). Takım sporlarına katılan sporcuların algılanan zihinsel yorgunluk farkındalığı düzeylerinin, bireysel sporlara katılanlara kıyasla daha yüksek olduğu; spor deneyimi süresi arttıkça ise bildirilen yorgunluk düzeylerinin azalma eğilimi gösterdiği belirlenmiştir. Betimsel bulgular, algılanan fiziksel ve bilişsel yorgunluk düzeylerinin genel olarak düşük olduğunu ve ölçek maddeleri boyunca genel ortalamanın 2,17 ile tutarlı seyrettiğini göstermiştir. Genel olarak, spora ilişkin etmenlerin algılanan zihinsel yorgunluk farkındalığı üzerinde demografik değişkenlere kıyasla daha belirleyici bir role sahip olduğu görülmüştür. Sonuç: Bulgular, spor eğitiminin antrenman ve toparlanmaya ilişkin ders içerikleri aracılığıyla sporcuların fiziksel ve bilişsel yorgunluğa yönelik farkındalıklarını artırabileceğine işaret etmektedir. Spor türü ve deneyime göre ortaya çıkan farklılıklar, bağlamsal ve deneyimsel etmenlerin önemini göstermektedir. Bu doğrultuda çalışma, yorgunluk farkındalığında eğitimin rolünü vurgulayarak alanyazına katkı sunmakta; gelecekteki araştırmalarda daha büyük örneklemlerle birlikte ek psikolojik ve çevresel değişkenlerin de ele alınması önerilmektedir.
